Gion Matsuri

The Gion Matsuri occurs annually in Kyoto. It is such a wonderful festival and I am so glad that I got to witness such a lively event. We all came prepared with our yukatas (summer kimonos) so that we looked the part because pretty much every girl was wearing one. We took lots of photos of ourselves before going out because we were so excited to wear our yukatas that night!

When we headed out to the main street, I was amazed with the amount of people who were at the festival. It was just crazy – like the Royal Adelaide Show, but so many more people!!!

There were many food stalls to eat from and they had lots of different types of Japanese foods ranging from karage
(fried chicken), takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (cabbage and pork pancakes), yaki tori (grilled chicken), yaki soba (fried noodles) and so much more! I ate the yaki soba and then for dessert, I ate a chocolate-coated, frozen, sprinkled banana. It was the ANTS PANTS!!! So good in fact, that I just had to take a photo so that I could remember how good it tasted and how good it looked!

This is a picture of all the people who were with us at the Gion Festival. I also met up with Megumi and her friend. I met Megumi on the contiki tour in New Zealand last year and it was really good to catch up with her. She was explaining all about the beautiful shrines that were on display that night.

It was so good to be apart of all the excitement of the Gion Festival. I loved it! It was great to hear the music coming from the shrines and to be amongst all the hustle and bustle of a busy, lively city during the biggest festival of the year!

The next day, we got to see many different shrines being pulled along by about fifty men. The shrines were so big and would have weighed over a tonne easily and it was amazing to see these strong men pulling it along. It would have been lots of hard work for them, so I was impressed that they had so much strength and stamina to keep going!

All in all, it was a great weekend sight-seeing and experiencing the Gion Festival.
